Failure is one of those things everyone has in common - such as putting our pants on one leg at a time. It’s a human experience. Some people handle the experience well, others not so well. What is the secret? How do some individuals bounce back so successfully after failure?
#1 They don’t go ahead and take failure personally. Failure is not a personal attack or even a indication of any type of character flaw. There is a clich saying something along the lines of “failure indicates you tried.” People who are actively pursuing goals and hopes fail frequently and they perceive it as part of the process. Instead of feeling not worthy or like a failure, they will reevaluate their strategy and try again.
The next time you experience failure instead of feeling negatively regarding yourself, feel good regarding the fact that you tried, and try again.
#2 They use the experience as a learning tool. Failure happens, right? Why not gain knowledge from the experience. Examine what went wrong and why? What else could you change or do differently the next time? How can you use your failure to achieve success?
#3 We sometimes fail for a reason. Perhaps our heart really was not into the effort. Maybe a limiting belief prevented us from achieving success. And it sometimes wasn’t the best opportunity. Usually whenever we fail there is a reason. Look around and evaluate why. Search for new opportunities and experiences that may bring success.
#4 Appreciate the experience. Gratitude is a strong emotion. Feeling gratitude for the failure and the experience will help you proceed with resolve and enthusiasm. Occasionally writing or journaling your ideas in a positive manner can help you accept failure as a positive experience instead of a negative one.
#5 Realize it happens to everybody and don’t hesitate to ask for support or advice. Among the great things about failure is it’s an equalizer. Realize that the strongest people in the world, the most famous people have all failed many, many times. Whenever you fail rather than internalizing it and having difficulties again and again, ask for assistance and advice.
#6 Accept your inner child. Remember as a child and running together with your friend? Occasionally you would fall right? What would you do? You would leap back up, not even really think about the fall and go back to running, right? Children possess a knack for centering on the fun and never letting the failures or falls stop them. Do as the song says, “pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again.” If you like what you’re working on, you won’t even offer a failure a second thought.
#7 Laugh. We all make some mistakes and those who can laugh at themselves and their errors get over them much faster compared to those that cannot.
Failure is part of life. Accept it as openly as you do success. Enjoy it, learn from it, and welcome it as a lesson and an opportunity to grow.
